Otepoti/Dunedin reveals itself to those who take the time to discover its treasures. Your local guide will tell you the story of this Edinburgh of the South; first in its class in many areas: 1st “city” in New Zealand, 1st medical school, 1st daily newspaper, 1st botanical garden, 1st secondary school for girls… This little city has great character! Your guide will show you around the city, and will let you take a breath of fresh air on the splendid Otago Peninsula. Dunedin truly deserves its title of wildlife capital of New Zealand!
What our expert says:
“Could this little city be the best place to live in New Zealand? That’s what we think, come and check it out for yourself with this guided tour.”

Program
You may know the city of Edinburgh, in Scotland, but have you heard of the ‘Edinburgh of the South?’ Yes, that’s the nickname of Dunedin, built by Scots who came to exile on the other side of the world in the 19th century. Who would have guessed that a few years later, Dunedin would become the wealthiest city in the country, and one of the most pleasant ones to live in!
We show this to you with a full day of discovery accompanied by an experienced local guide.
Departure at around 9 a.m. from the city centre. Your guide will show you the famous train station, one of the most photographed landmarks of New Zealand! You will see the oldest university in the country and the steepest street in the world (but don’t worry, there’s no need to walk up it!).
Then it’s time for a short coffee/tea break.
In the afternoon, your guide will take you to the remains of a 10 million year old volcano: the Otago Peninsula. You will discover its hilly landscapes, cliffs, fine sandy beaches and its remarkable fauna.
On board the Monarch, a well-known local boat who just celebrated her 70th birthday, you will get the chance to watch albatross playing with the wind at the end of the peninsula. Thousands of seabirds nest in these surroundings; such as cormorants, royal spoonbills, penguins…
On one of the beaches, you will meet the marine mammals that rest there: fur seals and sea lions. You will learn to tell the difference between these two so-called “cousins”.
At around 4 p.m., you will return to Dunedin. By then, you would have seen all of its wonders and secrets, and you will certainly agree that this city deserves its title of the ‘Wildlife capital’ of the country!

Q & A
Is there a daily departure?
This excursion is available from Monday to Sunday, upon request. Contact us by email or phone, and we will respond within 24 hours.
How long is the excursion?
It lasts between 6 to 7 hours, including a coffee/tea break. We spend about 2 hours in the city, and the rest on the Otago Peninsula. Departure is from 9 AM.
Where is the departure point?
At the central square of the Octagon. Your guide can also pick you up from your accommodation in the city center (at no extra cost).
How is the transportation arranged?
By minibus and on foot. Your guide will stop at several locations in downtown Dunedin before taking you to the Otago Peninsula (a 45-minute drive from the city center).
Are children allowed?
Yes, of course! However, this excursion is recommended for children over 5 years old, as it’s a fairly full day, but we can adapt to everyone’s needs.
Is there much walking?
Very little, just a few hundred meters in the city and on a beach on the peninsula.
What if the weather is bad?
This tour is available all year round. In the city, we often walk under covered areas that shelter the sidewalks. A little rain doesn’t stop the “Dunedinites” (inhabitants of Dunedin)! On the boat, we are protected from the weather.
Is it guaranteed to see animals?
All the animals on the peninsula are wild and move freely according to their needs (fortunately). While we can’t guarantee sightings, the chances of observing them are still very high. However, the sheep are always there!
How are meals organized?
A coffee/tea break is included in the morning. We recommend bringing your own sandwiches for lunch, which will be enjoyed at a picnic table or in a sheltered spot.
What if I don’t drink coffee or tea?
We’re sure you’ll find a drink that suits you! You should also know that Ōtepoti/Dunedin is famous for its craft beers and gins made from local plants… or even bread!
